The Union Means That Management Must Play By The Rules and Can't Do Whatever They Want, When They Want.
The International Union of Operating Engineers has a record of protecting SFWMD workers and improving their careers. It's been a struggle, but one that has clearly benefitted the lives of workers and their families. Just some of the accomplishments of the IUOE are:
*Annual wage increase for all members of the bargaining unit
*Freeze on the amount of money members pay even as insurance premiums increase- SFWMD must pay any increases
*Safety Committee was formed for the specific action of protecting members on the job
*IUOE fought to protect the shift schedule from being changed on the whim of SFWMD
*Increased access to information about workers' rights by setting up protected informational bulletin boards
We don't know exactly when the election will be held, but we do know that while management has tried to delay, delay, delay this election, it's happening in spite of their efforts. Election date is coming.
Remember, if it was up to management, as evident by their anti-union propaganda, this election would go their way and they would have full control of the issues that are important to you like wages, benefits, discipline and all working conditions. They don't and can't now because you're still protected by the union.
Let's keep it that way!
Because a contract that protects you, improves your working conditions and forces management to play by the rules is a real problem for those in management that want to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
Consider the discipline process before the union - you can ask your coworkers what that was like. Now, the discipline process is a REAL process that has protections for you and your coworkers.
The union has, in fact, protected some of your coworkers from unfair discipline over the years and even forced management to re-hire unfairly terminated workers WITH BACK PAY!
This management doesn't like to be held accountable. We hold them accountable to you.
